One year ago today The Flaming Lips, Jim James, Karen O, Moby, Lykke Li, Sky Ferreira, Zola Jesus, Donovan, Duran Duran and more came together at Los Angeles’ The Theatre at Ace Hotel to celebrate “The Music of David Lynch.” That literally was the name of the all-star concert, and now it’s the title of a live album recorded at the event. Out April 15th as a 180-gram double vinyl set, pre-orders are now available at Amazon. All proceeds benefit the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace. Twin Peaks fans will be particularly interested as the saga’s score composer Angelo Badalamenti performed three of the show’s pieces at the benefit with original Twin Peaks synthesizer player Kinny Landrum: “Laura Palmer’s Theme,” “Dance of the Dream Man” and “Twin Peaks Theme.” Bringing it full circle Moby performs his hit “Go” – which famously sampled “Laura Palmer’s Theme.” My Morning Jacket’s Jim James also played music from the series, “a deeply moving performance” – as Badalamenti described it – of “Sycamore Trees.” Elsewhere the band Twin Peaks cover Roy Orbison’s “In Dreams” ala Blue Velvet, Sky Ferreira takes on the same film’s title song and The Flaming Lips play a 10-minute soundscape inspired by Eraserhead and The Elephant Man. The double LP is brought to a close by David Lynch himself, reciting a poem as Donovan plays guitar.
There’s also a new book, Beyond the Beyond: Music from the Films of David Lynch, which discusses how Lynch “used sound to build mood, subvert audience expectations and create new layers of affective meaning.” The book features interviews with the same artists that performed at the Ace Hotel’s April 2015 benefit, including The Flaming Lips, Duran Duran, Moby, Sky Ferreira, Lykke Li, Karen O, Donovan, Angelo Badalamenti, Jim James, Chrysta Bell, Tennis, Twin Peaks and Zola Jesus. Out April 26th, this limited-edition book comes with the CD version of The Music of David Lynch.
