The Flaming Lips and Plastic Ono Band will perform side-by-side sets on both December 31st and January 1st at Oklahoma City’s Coca Cola Center for New Year Freakout #5!

According to ABC News Radio Online, “The band promises ‘more confetti, more balloons, massive volume and maximum weirdness’…  Coyne … plans to perform alongside Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band as he did with Weezer back in July.  ‘We go up with them, they come up with us and we all do music together,’ said Coyne.”

Neon Indian – who is playing Dallas’ Lights All Night festival on New Year’s eve – will open the January 1st Freak Out … and possibly guest on The Flaming Lips’ set (most likely during “Is David Bowie Dying??,” the first track on the EP the two artists collaborated on earlier this year, and a recent staple of Lips concerts).
The December 31st Freak Out opener is still to be announced (follow twitter/FutureHeartDay for updates).  The official after party features New Fumes’ “paranoid soundscapes” and Stardeath and White Dwarfs playing an “electric sunrise interpretation of Mahler’s 9th Symphony!”

The Flaming Lips will perform classic John Lennon covers with Sean Lennon and other members of The Plastic Ono Band (including Nels Cline of Wilco/ Thurston Moore fame) at the Freak Out and will sing “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” with Yoko at midnight.

I’ve been connected with [John] Lennon music my whole life,” Coyne explained to ABC News.  “Of all the people in the world that you could be around, I mean it’s so amazing to be around them. They’re just such cool, lovely people…to know that you could do this powerful music and this great collaboration, it’s amazing.”

Only 1500 seats are available, $100 per night (or $150 for both nights).  Tickets went on sale Black Friday, 10 AM CST at ticketstorm.com – via these links:

The Freak Out’s press release teased, “expect exclusive merch to be available for this event… once these are gone, they are gone for good” – referring to limited edition Flaming Lips 2011 releases, including the Gummy Fetus, live album Gummy Skull The Soft Bulletin: Live La Fantastique de Institution 2011 and their Strobo Trip Light Toy (including their six-hour long song “Found A Star On The Ground” featuring Sean Lennon). All three of these items were also added to the Flaming Lips online store on Wednesday, November 23rd.

  1. New York City, dubbing the collaboration as the “Plastic Ono Mothers”. The b-side “Listen, the Snow Is Falling” featured the same musicians as “Happy Xmas”, with the addition of Klaus Voorman on bass.
