UPDATE – June 18, 2015
Mercury Rev confirmed The Light In You
release date, tracklist, and other details.
“We are working on [a] new album,” Grasshopper revealed last July of Mercury Rev’s next release. “The last one had its flaws, but like pizza, even when it sucks, it’s still pretty fucking good.” After writing new material last summer, recording sessions for the as-yet untitled record started in the fall at Anthony Molina’s studio in the Catskills and with Dave Fridmann at his Tarbox Road Studios near Fredonia. According to Fridmann’s log, “a Mercury Rev meeting of the minds” kicked off the process on October 28, 2013, with a second series of Tarbox sessions commencing December 9th. “We record a bunch of stuff at Catskills studios,” Grasshoper says, “then Fridmann’s hammers it into shape at Tarbox…”
What can we expect?
Resonator 8. Steel Resonator Mandolin. Timpani. Sleigh Bells. All sorts of electric guitars….”Link Wray ghost tone”…
“It is the best stuff we have done in a long long time,” Grasshopper tweeted in the fall. “Gonna be big sounding!”
Although details beyond twitter are scant, we know Jonathan Donahue, Grasshopper Carlos Anthony Molina traveled to Tarbox for the first batch of sessions with Fridmann, from which two short videos (above) of “timpani takes and cymbal bashing with Dave Fridmann up at Tarbox Road Studios” was teased on Facebook last November. Donahue clarified the band personal on Facebook last month as “just Grasshopper and myself as ‘permanent’ members of the Rev along with D. Fridmann too, except he won’t leave Buffalo to tour (though he says we can play as many shows as we want in Buffalo and he will be there!). On the most recent recordings we’ve also got our longtime (13years) touring bass player Carlos Anthony Molina both engineering and making sound as well which is fantastic given his amazing collection of vintage studio equipment and his stellar ears…”
Sneak a peak of the sessions in the tweets collected below.
