Original Post February 13th:
Perhaps this partly explains why every year from January through the beginning of February rumors of who will play Bonnaroo run wild. More than any other festival, the anticipation for ‘Roo’s line-up is treated as a fun puzzle to solve. In-the-know @garychardonnay makes the most of the pre-announcement guessing games on twitter with
#rooclues (also tweeted on the official twitter/bonnaroo). This speculation sport is also lively discussed at bonnaroo.proboards (aka Inforoo.com) – administered by @TheInforooster, commonly thought to be the most reputable schedule source.
As per usual, there’s been fake handbills floating around the web the past few weeks as well – including this one made by a Inforoo member. But it appears last night that the real poster for the June 7-10, 2012 festival was leaked onto the internet, shown above left (click for larger image).
The artists listed here are mostly consistent with the top rumors, as well as other festival line-ups recently announced. What’s more, the four headliners on this poster match exactly to a description TheInforooster recently tweeted: “Insider dropped by last night on Inforoo and said that Phish is playing one night and Radiohead is playing Friday at Bonnaroo,” and that “a non-current artist that is in the works for Saturday and that RHCP ARE PLAYING saturday as well.”
If this is not the real poster, at the very least it’s a solid summary of the top-speculated artists (Phish, Battles, Fitz and The Tantrums, Fruit Bats, The Silent Comedy, White Denim, The War on Drugs) and the few confirmed (Alabama Shakes, NEEDTOBREATHE, The Word featuring Robert Randolph, John Medeski, and North Mississippi Allstars). Acts whose previously announced schedules logistically suggested Boonaroo was to be added to their tour dates are also listed in the above poster (The Shins, Foster the People, The Kooks, Red Hot Chili Peppers).
If this leak proves true Bonnaroo 2012 will also include Bon Iver, Mogwai, Alice Cooper, The Antlers, Tune-Yards, Wooden Shjips, Dawes, Gov’t Mule, The Arctic Monkeys, Feist, Umphrey’s McGee, The Kills, M Ward, Fucked Up, Flying Lotus, Drake, The Roots, Ben Folds Five, Joy Formidable, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Black Lips, Grouplove, Givers, Dum Dum Girls and Tennis.
Though we won’t know if this is a hoax until tomorrow, one thing for sure is Bonnaroo will continue their tradition of web-savvy, inventive line-up announcements (last year Conan O’Brien announced the acts in a viral Vevo video on YouTube, in 2010 they leaked artists one by one on various social media sites). Teamed with Spotify, for 2012 they have planned to simultaneously publicize both the festival and the music streaming service through twitter. Tickets go on sale February 18th at bonnaroo.com/tickets.
