“Really, the community built the home. There is no way we could have done it by ourselves. Norman is a phenomenal place. I’m not sure it could have happened anywhere else.”
-Ideal Homes president Vernon McKown in The Norman Transcript March 14, 2010
One can never be sure what TV program The Flaming Lips might pop up on. Case in point, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition isn’t regularly associated with alternative-noise-pop-psych-rock, but when the show headed to Oklahoma to help the Skaggs Family on February 1, 2010, Wayne Coyne headed to their home to help make it over (with host Ty Pennington, designer Michael Moloney, rapper/ TV personality Xzibit, Jillian Harris of “The Bachelorette,” and most crucially, hundreds of local volunteers) . Appearing in a brief interview in the closing segment of the show aired March 14, Wayne was shown struggling with some heavy sod.
In other recent Flaming Lips TV sightings… snippets of “Race for the Prize” have recently popped up in The Best of the I Love the ‘90s and 40 Most Slimmed Down Celebs; in the UK, Silver Trembling Hands soundtracked a Nokia X6 commercial; and as always, there’s a steady stream of “VH1 Rock Honors: The Who” reruns (featuring the Lips’ epic Tommy medley) on VH1 classic. More obviously, they kicked off Record Store Day with an epic performance of “Breathe” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. There’s also a commercial on the Discovery Channel for their show Time Warp and Brad Beesley’s film (with Sarah Price) Summercamp (featuring the music of The Flaming Lips) will air on the Sundance channel this Tuesday (May 11) at 6:25 AM, 11:30 AM, 4:45 PM… though we’re still waiting on Yo Gabba Gabba!
