MGMT are going all out in anticipation of their Friday the 13th show with Dinosaur Jr. The homecoming concert at Brooklyn’s newest arena, Barclays Center, is also the last of their 2013 North American dates and one the performances the band picked for a “taper section” trial run. In preparation they’re tuning their giant cowbell, giving out free tickets, tweeting oblique video messages from J Mascis, and hiding artwork to be found by fans game for a scavenger hunt. They also appeared on East Village Radio’s program Gay Beach. The full broadcast can be streamed here. The interview with Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden comes at the end of the show in two segments (separated by “Electric Feel” and “Alien Days – Ceephax Remix”).
MGMT is taking to twitter and (especially) Instagram to get fans psyched for the big show. On the latter they’re hosting a fan art contest and posting clues to find hidden one-of-a-kind autographed posters (of images from “Your Life Is A Lie’s” video) throughout the New York tri-state area. Check out the videos they tweeted of their cowbell prep among the tweets below. Just one more reason this concert is set to be special. Hopefully some hi-fi bootlegs from the taper section (particularly interesting because MGMT have been switching up their setlists nightly) ….
This is not the first time MGMT hosted a fan poster contest on Instagram. Last month they offered a chance to win a copy of the “Alien Days” out of print cassingle or a handmade drawing from the band. Below is some the stand-out original fan art submitted.
