In the past few days Tame Impala have added two new songs to their live catalog, both Flaming Lips covers. First they debuted “Silver Trembling Hands” at Dublin, Ireland’s Olympia Theatre on August 21st. Then they introduced “Are You A Hypnotist?” at Rock en Seine on August 23rd. So far video evidence to surface on the web has been scant (note to camera-carrying concert-goers – if you have more footage, please upload), but we do have a complete video of the latter and the last 75 seconds of the former:
The obvious reason for Tame Impala’s new jams is their upcoming American tour includes two strings of dates with The Flaming Lips. The west coast shows revolve around a “Halloween Blood Bath” at San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (ticket info here). Keep in mind that later that same night – midnight to be exact – the Lips’ new documentary will première at Frisco’s Roxie Theatre.
In addition to the likely prospect of Tame Impala covering the Lips at some of those shows, fans are hoping the two bands play together. Of course, Tame Impala were one of the guests on the 2012 collaborative album, The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends. Maybe they’ll play “Children of the Moon” – though neither group has ever attempted it live before. Watch a bit of its recording session from last spring, followed by Kevin Parker discussing his work with the Lips.
Tame Impala’s recent leg of touring ended this past weekend at Britain’s Reading and Leeds Festivals. They’ll pick things up again in October at the aforementioned Lips dates. The five east coast Tame Lips shows will be opened by Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl’s Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger. The west coast string around Halloween will be opened by White Denim. Full tour dates for all four bands are at the bottom of this post.
Tame Impala are obviously excited to be touring with the Lips…
…and vice versa: “The sun is about to go down. It’s about 8:30 and you just had your first cocktail. You’ve got your friends in the backyard; maybe you’re swimming or something. If you put this song on, it can be like it’s 1976 and you’re a kid again. Tame Impala is one of my favorite bands on the planet right now.”
That’s Steven Drozd explaining why his list of favorite summer songs begins with Tame Impala’s “Apocalypse Dreams.” The two bands share the production talents of Dave Fridmann and their relationship stretches back to before Innerspeaker.
UPDATE – October 31st
Both of the live covers from August first discussed on this page were included as the B-side of Tame Impala and The Flaming Lips split Peace and Paranoia EP. More details on the release – along with a stream of the entire EP – are here. Tame Impala has also played these covers at other shows, and joined the Lips on stage at the Halloween Blood Baths. Wayne Coyne explained the connection between the two bands to Stereogum: “We’ve been around them quite a bit. I think we ran into them 2009, maybe 2010, at a festival in Japan. They had just gotten done playing, and I’m always wandering around meeting people, and there was a little bat that was attached to the ceiling in between our dressing rooms. I remember Sonic Youth was there, and we were all going around showing everybody. And the kids — I call them kids because I think they were all probably only 20 years old when I met them back then — they had just gotten done playing, and they had just done some acid that they smuggled in from Australia through Singapore into Japan. I mean, that’s insane. And they were going to have a jam session in their dressing room. And I was like, These sound like my kind of guys.’ And they’re just fun, you know, freaks. Cool musicians with cool ideas. So I think from then we liked them. And I think it’s just the coincidence of sometimes you put out a record and another band puts out a record, and you end up making these circuits together, playing festivals together. And I think we were lucky that that happened with us for a couple records in a row. And they started to work with [longtime Flaming Lips producer] Dave Fridmann, so we’d know more about them and hear more about their music as they were making it. And then I got Kevin to do some guitar stuff on that Heady Fwends thing. He was on his last day of doing the record that’s out now with Dave Fridmann in the studio on the day that I arrived up there, so we had a day together in the studio where our schedules overlapped.”
