Watch Coachella 2013 Weekend 1 On Demand: Tame Impala, Modest Mouse, Postal Service, Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, Stone Roses, Dinosaur Jr, Nick Cave, Grizzly Bear, more

The past three nights at Coachella were the first of the festival’s two weekends this year (the same bands will play the same times and stages next weekend). Thankfully for those that couldn’t make it to Indio, California, much of the action was streamed on YouTube.  Watch full sets from Modest Mouse, Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, Stone Roses, Dinosaur Jr, and others below.

Beyond the Friday flashbacks from headliners Blur and The Stone Roses, Coachella 2013 kicked off with a controversial set from Modest Mouse.  Many assumed Isaac Brock was loaded as he sang a bit from “The Lion King” and asked the crowd to hum in unison. To some it was a sloppy, embarrassing set; to others an off-the-rails festival highlight (watch and judge for yourself above).  Either way, it included new song “Be Brave” and ended with the band going over their alloted time and playing “Float On” in the face of Coachella organizers pulling the plug mid-song.  Elsewhere, Yeah Yeah Yeahs took to the stage with Ms. O in a wild outfit (that hinted at their manic performance to follow) and a gospel choir. “It’s sacrilege, sacrilege, sac – ri – lege.” Yes it is Karen.  Sing it sister.

There was more nostalgia on Saturday: The Postal Service’s first festival set since Sasquatch 2004, a primer for this spring and summer’s highly hyped reunion tour.  And speaking of buzz, Phoenix finished their headlining slot with R. Kelly stopping by.  On Sunday Tame Impala kicked out some jams (before their set was cut short by a keyboard malfunction); Nick Cave played his second set (this one with The Bad Seeds in support of their new LP, following Friday’s with his otherwise disbanded group Grinderman); and Red Hot Chili Peppers headlined.

Other highlights included some new tunes from Vampire Weekend, Phoenix and Local Natives; classic from Stone Roses, Dinosaur Jr and Violent Femmes; Spiritualized floating in space and Grizzly Bear’s moody Saturday night special.
