New Fumes Makes New Music with Flaming Lips, Literally…

In anticipation of their work together on Heady Fwends due out Record Store Day, The Flaming Lips and New Fumes have teamed up for a new video, “Girl, You’re So Weird”…

New Fumes not only recorded this track with the Lips for the double LP out Saturday, he also literally made the 20,000 multi-color-psychedelic-each-unique records…
…as well as assorted other tasks for the band – like getting blood from Erykah Badu for the special picture disc version of the album, pictured at bottom.

New Fumes – aka Daniel Huffman – may be familiar to you even if you don’t know it.  When Annie Clark left the Polyphonic Spree to create St. Vincent he filled her slot in the Spree.  Prior that he was the guitarist in Comet and Ghostcar and that frog that played synth with The Flaming Lips circa the release of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.  In the immortal words of Wayne Coyne, “Daniel you make a cute frog.”

Huffman produced the Flaming Lips’ new multi-color vinyl by hand this March between touring as the opener on Polyphonic Spree’s “You+Me” phase 1  and 2 dates.   Last year he made the Lips’ similar one-of-a-kind vinyl EPs – collaborations with Neon Indian, Prefuse 73, Lightning Bolt and Yoko Plastic Ono Band.  View pictures of his most recent vinyl work here.  These 20,000 records took him four weeks “working 12-13 hour days, 7 days a week.
