Flaming Lips fans who will be in Chicago on July 7th and 8th for the bands two-set shows at Aragon Ballroom – both featuring all of The Soft Bulletin – were recently greeted with even more exciting news: they’re playing Dark Side of the Moon at the Chicago edition of Dave Matthew’s Caravan (July 9-11, more here).
Now they are planning to play the same two albums live at… wait for it, Hollywood Forever Cemetery??
In addition to the two classic LPs to be performed by The Flaming Lips, Marnie Stern will open…
….and the Lips will play a special collaboration with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros in the graveyard’s belltower (details here)…
When Wayne Coyne first tweeted a video of himself at The Alcove of Devotion inside Hollywood Forever Cemetery in February (see it below), the idea of The Flaming Lips actually playing in this graveyard almost seemed too weird to be true – even by Flaming Lips standards. But alas, they’ll play not just one, but two complete albums on two nights, and a belltower morning performance.
Moral of the story: Never doubt Wayne’s tweets, no matter how wacky they may seem to be…
In case you’re wondering, here’s a little background info from hollywoodforever.com, “Hollywood Forever is a cemetery unlike any other in the world. One of the world’s most fascinating landmarks, Hollywood Forever Cemetery is the final resting place to more of Hollywood’s founders and stars than anywhere else on earth. Founded in 1899, the cemetery was an integral part of the growth of early Hollywood. Paramount Studios was built on the back half of the original Hollywood Cemetery, where the studio is still in operation today. The cemetery of choice for most of the founders of Hollywood’s great studios, as well as writers, directors, and, performers, Hollywood Forever Cemetery is now listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Visitors come from all over the world to pay respects Johnny Ramone, Cecil B. DeMille, Jayne Mansfield, Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks, and hundreds more of Hollywood’s greatest stars.”
L.A. Times music_blog: “The mid-June dates are confirmed… the poster teases some kind of all-day or all-night Flaming Lips activity, noting the event is “two nights, one morning.”
In preparation for their fourth annual New Year’s Freak-Out, The Flaming Lips spent most of December 2010 re-arranging songs from their 1999 masterpiece The Soft Bulletin – some of which had never been played live, most of which had not been played recently, and none of which had been played quite the way they were performed in the first hour of 2011. That performance is, to date, the only performance of the classic album – ever…
This spring and summer they will play it (as of now announced) eight more times (listed below).
