-Wayne Coyne on Dark Side of the Moon’s “isolation and insanity” influence in his life and work,

Wayne Coyne: “just as a way to push the conversation onward — I said, ‘Maybe we should just do a cover version of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon,'” Coyne says. “And thinking they would say, ‘Yea, well, maybe not,’ and we would think of something else. But it didn’t.”

By Robin Murray, December 18, 2009

Wayne: “Our new version would probably sync up in some philosophical aspects with Tron, which probably is not very watchable unless you have some really good music or marijuana to get you through it.”

“I’m picking up this giant mirror ball apparatus that we’ve been having welded by some truss experts outside of Dallas. It’s 20 feet around. The guy who is doing the final inspection of it is the same guy who made Pink Floyd’s giant mirror ball in 1995.”

“Dark Side of the Moon gets slagged a lot because it’s so popular, but I never felt that way.”

“If you look closely, Pink Floyd is probably a lot more punk rock than a lot of punk rock groups were.”

Dennis Coyne “every Christmas we’ll get a smoke machine and some strobe lights out. Someone will dress up as Santa Claus and come running through, flashing lights at the little kids.”

“When I was seven we found a dead bat outside my house, sprayed it with polyurethane and gave it to Wayne for Christmas.”

“The sessions were tracked in Oklahoma City and recorded by Okies Trent Bell and Chris Harris at Bell Labs studio in Norman. It mastered by longtime band collaborator Dave Fridmann and co-produced by The Flaming Lips, Stardeath and White Dwarfs, Bell and longtime band manager Scott Booker.”

“On New Year’s Eve at the Cox Center in Oklahoma City, the Stardeath and the Lips will perform the entire album live at the stroke of midnight, after a full sets leading into the official 2010 countdown celebration. The show will also feature the “world’s biggest balloon drop,” claims Lips frontman Wayne Coyne”
