Record Store Day 2014 Events Guide

Record Store Day isn’t just about buying records. As it’s name suggest, it’s first and foremost a celebration of independent record stores. To this end many shops, large and small, have special events such as artist meet-and-greets, free give-aways or live music. Record Store Day’s full list of events is here. Below is a guide of the most anticipated of these throughout the U.S. of A. Be sure to seek out what your local retailer has planned by visiting their website or social media updates.

As per usual Jack White’s Third Man Records in Nashville has something extra special planned for Record Store Day: Jack in person creating the “World’s Fastest Released Record, studio-to-store, in the history of mankind.”

The Third Man website explains: “First thing in the morning, Jack White will take the stage in Third Man’s blue room and record direct-to-acetate what will serve as the limited edition version of his next single, a live rendition of the title track from his upcoming LP Lazaretto. The masters will be rushed over to United Record Pressing who will immediately begin pressing 45s. The sleeves will be printed from pictures taken at the show. The finished records will be whisked back to Third Man to sell to awaiting fans. All in the same day. All in a matter of mere hours. As long as there are fans in line waiting to buy the single, United will continue to press and deliver them to Third Man to sell. Even if it takes all day.”

UPDATE – Third Man’s Instagram and twitter are documenting “The World’s Fastest Record!” process.

Third Man will also host Whirlwind Heat’s farewell performance, also their first live show since 2006. The website adds, “a great selection of local vendors will be on hand to keep everyone well-fed and refreshed… and there will, as always, be some surprises…For those who can’t score tickets, The World’s Fastest Record will be made available for sale from the front of Third Man Records as soon as copies are pressed. Anybody who shows up that day during business hours wanting to purchase a copy will get one. Third Man promises to deliver until all customers are satisfied (one per customer, obviously!). The World’s Fastest Record will only be available at Third Man Records on Record Store Day. One time only!”

Here’s the Third Man Records schedule for April 19, 2014:
10am – Jack White recording World’s Fastest Record (limited edition “Lazaretto” 7”) and short concert
2pm – Whirlwind Heat Live
4pm – Collect your RSD exclusives on your way out of the venue and enjoy your evening!

Mike Mills will be at the Scarborough, Maine location of Bull Moose (457 Payne Road) at 2 pm singing autographs and celebrating R.E.M.’s new 4 LP Unplugged box. It’s a fitting appearance for several reasons, noted themaineedge.com: a cassette of R.E.M.’s Fables of the Reconstruction was the first sale at the first Bull Moose store; Record Store Day was co-founded by Chris Brown, head of marketing for Bull Moose in Maine and New Hampshire and Mills has a reputation as a huge supporter of record stores. “In whatever towns we would go to,” Mills says of touring with R.E.M. “we’d try to find the local record store and see what we wanted that we didn’t have already. That was our passion. That was pretty much our life. It was all about music and we were happy to do it.”

Finally, Oklahoma City’s Guestroom Records will host live music by Sugar Free Allstars (3 pm), Travis Linville (4 pm) and Colourmusic (5 pm). The Norman location have live music by Kyle Reid & The Low Swinging Chariots (1 pm) and Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (2 pm).
